Great Run

Up nice and early this morning and ran one of my favorite 5 mile loops from Cleveland Circle to St Mary's all along Beacon St. It was nice and quiet out there and definitely the perfect time of day before all the activity on Beacon St.

Great to get 5 miles in and hopefully I can continue to build on this distance.

3 mile loop

Legs are definiately a bit tired from last nights run and the 6 miler earlier in the week, but pushed through and plan to rest them Friday. Cardio wise all felt good and that is encouraging for me the key is too make sure I do not run back-to-back days and put my lower body under too much stress since that has always been my problems.

Nice 3 miler though.

Summit Ave

3 mile loop around Summit Ave in Brookline. Ran up and down Summit Avenue twice, great workout and definitely a good workout for doing when time is short, really gives my butt a great kick.

Great Run

Final day in Chicago and finished early at work, despite being really tired I headed to the Gym since I felt very icky from eating and drinking lots of bad things this week. Was planning to run 4 miles, did 4 miles took a cup of water and felt good so hoped back on the treadmill and ran another 2 miles. I managed to do 6 miles which I think is my longest run of the year, so very happy with that.

My right knee was definitely tired and hurting a little during the last mile, but I wanted to hit the magic number 6 and it felt truly great to do that.

Off to a good start

So I got up at 6:30 am and did 2.5 miles, was a little short of time, so I went and did a hilly run as opposed to the 2 miles I did yesterday on flat, defiantely felt the workout more, but this is good for my mission for getting back in my shorts - I ran in Capris this morning, it was cooler and I needed to cover up.

Last night too before super I went and did a 2 mile walk, which is something else I want to incorporate into my mission to get back into shorts in June.

Memorial Day Run

Very hot today in Boston, decided about lunch time to go for a run, very smart running in the hottest part of the day, it was good though and I certaintly built up a sweat, did a 2 mile run.

I got super motivation today, since it was hot out I went to put shorts on, I had been wearing capri's recently, my shorts are all super-fitted and I have to say they all were very unflattering. I have some lumps and bumps that were not present, or at least not that noticeable this time last year, and in general I looked like I was wearing shorts a size too small. I finally found a loose fitting pair, but I was very body-consicious the whole time.

My goal for the month of June is too shed of those pounds, tone the butt and thighs and be able to wear my shorts with out being mortified. This means lots of running, squats and making the right food choices. I really do not want to feel how I felt yesterday about my body!

Yipee.... 3 mile Run

Drove down to Hyannis today to work a road race this weekend, nice drive down, just realized too that it was the longest solo drive I ever did. Very exciting.

Went for a 3 mile run at the hotel gym, felt great, then spent 30 minutes on the elliptical trainer, which was great. I desperately need to get in shape and lose some pounds. The one thing that has been holding me back is time, my schedule and life is my own again from June 3, so very excited to get to that point.

Lap of Reservoir

Nice relaxing Friday, off work have some visitors from Ireland coming into town so I am busy preparing for them. Managed to go for a run around the reservoir, it is a 2 mile loop. In all honesty I was a little tired near the end, still happy to be getting back out for a run, and thankfully it was pain-free around the knee area which is the most important.

Test Run

On event for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, had a little time on my hands so went for a test run. All went well, ran 2 miles it was a little hot out so that was challenging but other than that I had no knee pain, so yippee.

What is frustrating though is my schedule for the next 6 days does not really give me any time to get my runs in, but at least I know what that added rest in, all will be fine and it is nothing serious.

Frustrating Week

A really frustrating week since I wanted to really keep up and improve on my daily runs. My left hamstring, behind the knee area began hurting me last Saturday and pretty much has been sore all week.

I spent the week though doing some strength training, but overall I felt that I did more bad than good. Eating out, eating lots of chocolate, chips and also a few beers.

I know if I had been able to run I would have eaten better, but since I was dejected I just give up on all else. Very weak, I need to be more motivated on weeks where I cannot burn calories running by being more in control of my food choices.

Hamstring

Wet day today in Boston, had to work in the morning, got home around noon and was excited about going for a run in the rain.

Dressed up ready to go, was in pain before getting to the end of my street. My hamstring felt tight yesterday all right but never thought nothing of it. Unfortunately very tight and sore when trying to run, even if I was just jogging. Turned around came home and did some weights instead, very disappointing.

Two for Two

Got up this morning a little later than planned, still had time though so fitted in a 2 mile run on the way back, I passed a flight of steps that I always see people running up and down in Washington Square, I never actually ran them before, so did that today. 33 steps in all, I did it twice, up and down.

On the way back home them the back of legs felt tired, but that was great. I love feeling fatigued like that since it means I pushed it. My heart-rate was really racing too.

Got home and then did about 15 minutes weights and then 5 minutes stretching.

I am very happy to be back exercising and while it does not seem much, I know I can build up in no time, just in time for summer and shorts.

Back from Mini-Vacation

So the last week or so has been busy, my sister got married, the wedding was in Ireland, so I was out of the country for a week. I packed one days running gear, but things were hectic and I was a little hung-over some of the time so unfortunately I did not get anything in. I did do a little weights though.

Got in a two mile run this evening, more to brush off cobwebs than anything else. I probably could have done another mile, but I just wanted to just get the blood flowing. I felt strong running so I a eager to keep going and get myself up to a regular 20/25 miles per week. I spent 20 Min's after doing weights.

I have a mini goal for now, a 3.5 Miler on Mothers Day coming up next Sunday. I did the race last year and my goal is to beat that time 30:33 Pace 8:44. Maybe a great goal would be to finish under 30 minutes. So now I have 10 days to get in some regular runs, and do some speed work.

Happy Friday

I do not usually run on Friday's, on Thursday nights I like to have a glass of wine and watch some late night TV. Since the writer's strike has been on, lots of my regular Thursday night shows are not on, so last night I was in bed at 10pm, and did not have a drink.

Alarm went off this morning at 6:30am, got myself dressed and ready to go. Did the same 3 mile loop as yesterday, I felt great for the most part, towards the end my right hip got very tight and also my right ankle hurt. It bruised slightly and I think I hit it against the other ankle, as I said in an earlier post I feel like I have lost form since coming back from injury and I think I am running funny. I just hope that I can loosen up and run and not think about it, and the form will come back.

Spent 10 minutes stretching and using the foam roller seemed to help the hip area. So far it has been a great week for me getting out there and running.

Next week is a bit of a wash, I am back in Ireland my sister is getting married. There will be lots of broken male hearts, as now the last of the Kelly girl's are taken! I will try and run, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and then the rest of the week, it is drinking, dancing, and I am sure a few tears will be shed.

First Run

While it was not my first run of the year, do not get me wrong I have been running a little, but it definately felt like a fresh start.

I did one of my go to routes, 1.5 miles from Cleveland Circle to Coolidge Corner and back, it is a 3 mile loop. The joy about running first thing in the morning is that there is no pedestrians, and not that much traffic, free to run on the roads and switch off the mind a little and just zone.

I have to say though it felt great, it was not too difficult, not really sure what my pace was, nothing too taxing, on one hill on the way back I slowed down a little but was fine other than that.

On the way back home I noticed that my favorite local Indian Restaurant was closed down, and there was a 'Thank you sign" out, it made me very sad, since that is or guess was my all time favorite take-out place, they knew my voice when I called and knew my order and many times give me my Naan bread with their compliments. Oh how I will miss Indian Cafe, the Chicken Tikka was my go to pre-race meal, instead of eating pasta the day before, I would have Indian Food!

Finished my run, it was a beautiful day to be running in Boston. At home did a pretty intensive 30 minute weight workout. Overall really pleased with my start to training.

During all my non-running I was doing lots of weights and definately have seen my upper-body and core get toned and defined, it is just all the weight that I have put on has gone to my thighs and butt! A few weeks of running(and the right food choices) and hopefully that will start to shift!

Finding Motivation

Yesterday I was in Copley Square, I used to work there and be in Copley Square every day, I now work in Cambridge and do not often be in Copley Square much. There were workers out putting together the seating for the finish line of the Boston Marathon, which is this upcoming Monday, and the 2008 Women's Trials this upcoming Sunday.

I ran my first Boston Marathon last year, check out my blog dedicated to it... http://emmabagnell-boston.blogspot.com/. It really made me think of the current state of my running, and those few pounds (5 or 6) that I have put on these past few months.

My running over the winter has been averaging maybe 20 miles a month, whereas last year when training for Boston I started with averaging 20 miles a week to 30/35 miles a week. Definately a big difference!!!

I feel sluggish now on my runs and I feel awkward form wise. I experienced quite a few foot/ankle issues last year and toward the latter part of the year I began skipping runs to allow more recovery, then I went through the old run one day, things hurt wait a day or two and then run. At some point towards the end of October I really stopped running on a regular basis.

I did the BAA Half in October with a goal of breaking 2hrs for the second time that year (I ran a 1:58 in the More Half Marathon in New York that March), the last several miles of the BAA Half I was in lots of pain with my foot/ankle and for the rest of October I did no running. That was the start of the downslide!!!

In early November I ran 2 back-to-back 5ks in consective weeks and lowered my PR in both, I set a new PR of 25mins 15secs, which thrilled me as I find shorter races challenging as I feel like when I run it takes me 15 mintues to get into my groove. Along the way for the first time I placed in my age-group, and got my first running trophy - ok it was a beer glass with the name of the race, but I was thrilled!

Pretty much after that race, my ankle/foot hurt and I lost interest... so since middle of November to now,
I run somedays,
I have more non-running days than running days.
I have put on some weight, my favorite jeans no longer fit
I have been more moody and definately find getting up in the mornings is harder....
I also have been missing out on all the endorphins, all the extra energy that I had while running.

It all stops now!!! Being in Copley Square, seeing them prepare for one of the greatest sporting events - The Boston Marathon - has made me nostaglic.

I want to run, I want to lose some weight, I want to be strong, I want to sweat so much the salt crystals on my face, and people stop on the street to tell me I have sun-burn and I explain actually no, I just ran!!
